Collection: Alocasia
Not to be confused with Colocasias (named after the lotus root for its fleshy, sometimes edible roots—think the taro in your local chain’s bubble milk tea), scientists innovatively named this plant Alocasia (“A” for “not” + “Locasia” for “Kolokasia). Like lotuses, alocasias love their water and humidity, and can often crisp up at the edges without proper moisture. However, unlike the lotus, they prefer chunky, well-draining soil. With the proper loving care, these plants will not only grow the massive ears of an elephant, but they will grow the heart of one, too. Or, at least, they’ll grow in yours.
