Like the string of pearls, this member of the daisy family (Asteraceae) adapted to the heat of South Africa stores water and reduces surface area to prevent water loss, increasing its photosynthesis through a clear “window” it has on each of its leaves. While no one knows for sure why the peregrinus (traveller) is shaped in this way, its crawling growth across the ground gives the illusion of a thousand dolphins leaping across the water.

Care Guide
How to Care for String of Dolphins (Curio peregrinus, syn. Senecio peregrinus/hippogriff)?
Though arguably an easier-going plant than the string of pearls, this plant has the same care requirements, so overwatering it with little air circulation (such as deep in a pot) can lead to all the dolphins falling off one by one. This is often remedied when you remember that these plants are made for hot deserts and enjoy bright light, dry weather, and open air. If the beads start to grow a bit leaner, the plant is letting you know it’s time for its next drink.
