Philodendron Black & Gold Melanochrysum

Originally described as a dark velvety plant varnished with a gold sparkle, the species found in the tropical forests of Colombia soon became known as the melanochrysum (melano meaning “black,” and chrysum meaning “golden”). Like it’s name and look implies, this is a plant that loves to be pampered, with hemiepiphytic growth that struggle to size up without upward support and velvety leaves that thrive in humidity but dislike being wet. That being said, following the whims of this slightly temperamental plant can reap some rich results, with long dark leaves and the golden sheen for which the plant came to be known.

How to Care For Philodendron Black & Gold Melanochrysum?

As mentioned, the melanochrysum can be a trickier plant to take care of. Without high humidity and structure (from a pole or beam), this plant will struggle to shoot new leaves, but in a condition with excess moisture (water drops) and still air, the plant can easily rot. However, once its initial conditions are set and the plant establishes itself in your home, the plant also starts to adapt to your patterns, making it a lot more forgiving and a lot more rewarding.
