Philodendron Black Cardinal: While this philodendron is known for its black foliage, its scientific name actually refers to its underlying red hue. Erubescens means “blushing.” And, although it’s not exactly what the name refers to, this plant does have shy tendencies, growing close to the ground with a compact base that doesn’t sprawl out to climb trees. That being said, it has a gorgeous tan to its dark green to purple leaves that get darker in dappled or morning light, due to the presence of secondary metabolites (like melatonin) that exist in its leaves.
How to Care for Philodendron Black Cardinal?
Philodendrons don’t tend to be picky, as long as their conditions are relatively consistent, due to the adaptable nature that has them established across different habitats in South and Central America. They don’t like drying out, but can handle it better than some other plants, and though they appreciate some organic fertilizers, they don’t require it to live quite happily by your desk at home.
