A classic home-dweller with a bit of red tint, the ruby rubber plant is actually a Dutch mutant baby of Ficus elastica “Tineke,” a variegation of the Asian Ficus elastica. Ficus elastica was first sourced for rubber due to the compounds in its latex sap, and though it didn’t provide high enough yields to keep the job, it’s a tree that’s firmly rooted in history (live roots literally being used to bridge lands) and Western indoor gardening.
