Cryptanthus fall into the same family as tillandsias (air plants) and other epiphytic bromeliads gathering nutrients from the water and air. However, unlike their counterparts, this small robust plant digs itself hardily into the ground, like cosmic aliens flattened against the earth, and gathers the energy to grow some flowers. And though its flower is quite small and particular on pollinators, they compensate by simultaneously throwing out a number of pups before dropping its flower and passing away.

Care Guide

How to Grow and Care for Cryptanthus Bivittatus, Earth Star?

Cryptanthus is quite hardier than some of the epiphytic bromeliads that need particular water and air circulation conditions and are therefore perfect for people who are starting out. This humidity loving plant is surprisingly drought tolerant. They can also store water in their center, of “water tank,” though it’s important to make sure it doesn’t start to rot and smell. This plant is sensitive to chemicals (like chlorine and less diluted fertilizers)
