Nepenthes alata, a tropical carnivorous plant mainly native to the Philippines, might be translated as “winged banisher of sorrows,” nepenthes (“no sorrow” in Greek) invoking a magical potion Helen gave Telemachus (Odysseus’ son) to cope with his father’s absence. Though the insects that fall into the cups for digestion might formally disagree, there are some sources of traditional medicine that suggest this plant used to be used to treat anything from hangovers to toothaches.

Care Guide

How to Care for Asian Pitcher Plant, Nepenthes alata?

There’s a good reason why pitcher plants are considered one of the easiest-going carnivorous plants. Though it can take up to 10 years to mature (at which point it will surprise you by climbing upward, as a vining plant), the plant is much more forgiving. That being said, rain/distilled water, higher humidity (60%), and light are key to cultivating the pitchers, or monkey-cups, on the leaves, which will benefit with ~1cm of supplemental (distilled) water.
