The blue oil fern is a fascinating South Asian plant due to a distinct sheen caused by the microscopic structure of their leaves, meant to diffuse or capture light that filters through the canopies. These features have made it a point of study in the pursuit of different synthetic UVB-resistent coloring. However, unlike its less-aesthetic relative, the wart fern (M. scolopendria), the blue oil fern has no recorded uses in cultural history before the 21st century.

Care Guide

How to Grow and Care for Blue Oil Fern (Microsorum Thailandicum)?

Though the blue oil fern—naturally found in both the nooks of trees and rocks—tend to be quite adaptable and more tolerant to watering mishaps than several other fern varieties, it’s still a fern from a tropical environment and prefers high moisture and humidity to keep glossy and happy (its leaves can droop or crisp with neglect). However, with a terrarium environment or with consistent moisture, the plant can be a breeze.
