While many others in this plant’s (sometimes) temperate environments senesce a bright red and orange colours (pulling back green chlorophyll to abandon its leaves during winter) before spilling bright green buds in the spring, the autumn fern counterintuitively grows vulnerable new shoots (and its spore pods, for which its scientifically named) in autumn colours to protect them (possibly) from harsh conditions. This form of defence has historically made it a popular indoor and outdoor aesthetic throughout the year.
